Wine Tours & Travel: Prince Edward County
Prince Edward County
(PEC) is approximately a 2 hour drive from
Toronto. It's a great weekend destination with something for
everybody. Beaches, water sports, golf and fine dining are just a
few of the attractions.
In the last few years, the wine industry has
taken off and the area now has 10 wineries open to the public. If
you can organize a designated driver, check out the winery profiles at Taste
Trail. Otherwise, try Prince
Edward Wine & Culinary Tours to be chauffeured around in
luxury. They also offer bicycle tours.
I
particularly recommend The Grange of Prince Edward Estate Winery, Carmela Estate
Winery, Huff Estates Winery and Waupoos Estates Winery from a wine tasting
perspective, and the
County
Cider Estate Winery for lunch and the view. It's location on a little
hill overlooking the lake, is spectacular and it has an extremely inviting patio
at the back which gives way to a picturesque vineyard sloping down to the
lake. If it's a sunny day, I
can't think of a better location to have a drink and enjoy the view.
Picton is a great base for a weekend visit to PEC. Bloomfield is a good alternative.
Check out Bed
& Breakfast Canada or PEC
Yellow Pages for accommodation possibilities.
As far as restaurants are concerned, my top picks are Portabella (476-7057); Harvest
(476-6763) and Currah's (476-6374) all of which are all in Picton; The Inn -
Lake on the Mountain (476-1321), 10 minutes outside of Picton towards the
ferry; or the pub at the Waring House (476-7492), 5 minutes out of town on
33 West.
For day time leisure activities, try Sand Banks Provincial Park, about
20 minutes from either Picton or Bloomfield, which has terrific
beaches. For the golfers, try Picton Golf & Country club
(476-1485).
