Wine Tours & Travel: Niagara

Map of Southern OntarioWines of Ontario is managed by The Wine Council of Ontario which is a non-profit trade association for the wine industry in Ontario.  The site provides a single point of departure from which to explore Ontario producers.  It has links to each of the major wineries as well as downloadable maps which you can use to plot your journey.  Note that many of the wineries feature concerts and other special events throughout the summer.  Vines Magazine is a good source of current winery information.

Prince of Wales hotelThe official Niagara-on-the-Lake site has useful information on overnight accommodation and restaurants however I strongly recommend acquiring the Shaw Festival Brochure which has a complete list of Bed & Breakfasts as well as information on dining, antiques etc.  Call 1-905-468-4263 if you are overwhelmed by the accommodation selection.

Shaw Cafe & Wine BarIf you are spending a weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake, make sure you visit the Shaw Cafe and Wine Bar.

Niagara Grape & Wine FestivalsThe Niagara Grape & Wine Festivals is a non-profit organization that runs a series of seasonal wine festivals in the Niagara region - The Niagara Icewine Festival in January; The Niagara New Vintage Festival in June; and the Niagara Wine Festival in September.

Alternatively and/or additionally, visit the Niagara Wine & Food Classic  Billed as a spectacular wine and culinary event held during the autumn wine harvest, "your luxurious weekend registration includes premium Grand Tasting receptions, food and wine pairing events, celebrity chef cooking demonstrations and a passport tour of the Niagara Wine Route...all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Niagara Falls."

Niagara Wine Tours InternationalGrape & Wine ToursIf you would like the locals to arrange a wine tour for you, try Niagara Wine Tours International, located on the main street next to the Royal Park hotel.  They offer Via Rail packages daily to Niagara with pickup in St. Catharines or Niagara Falls for our Lunch and Winery Tour.  They also pick up most Saturday mornings at the Royal York Hotel for a day trip to Niagara wineries.  Other operators include Grape and Wine Tours who do Toronto pickups for groups of six or more or Niagara Winery Tours who offer door-to-door service from Niagara or Toronto Hotels.

Another option if you want to be pampered is the Wine Country Getaway  from weekendtrips.com, a Toronto based company specializing in weekend travel and leisure ideas.
